Hi! I’m Carolina Y. Sales, and I’m running for a second term on the District 64 School Board. I have two kids, and I’ve been a D64 parent for 9 years. I’ve lived in Park Ridge for almost my entire life and have practiced as an attorney for over 17 years.
In 2019 when I joined the board, I also became the secretary and a member of the policy committee. I’m currently the vice president and a member of the student services action plan committee.
Why would you want an attorney on the board? Well, my job is to read, research, write, negotiate, and counsel clients in order to solve their problems and help people make well-reasoned decisions. Those are skills that translate well into board service.
I’ve definitely been humbled by my time on the board. We transitioned to a new superintendent, went through the pandemic, approved a new strategic plan, completed the kindergarten construction, and are now hiring another superintendent.
My goals for the next four years are for the benefit of our students and, in turn, the community as a whole:
First, I want to help the district continue its work on the strategic plan, which the board unanimously approved in April of 2021. It contains various objectives within the five major goals, including improving staffing, curriculum reviews, and (most importantly) ensuring consistency across the district for all of our students with the multi-tiered system of supports, Section 504 plans, and special education program. While our administrators are spearheading these efforts, I want to make sure that our teachers, teachers assistants, and staff feel supported.
Second, I plan to rejoin the policy committee so that the policies remain a focus of our work as board members. The policies should encompass the district’s goals and continue to provide guidance for how and what we provide for our students.
My third goal is to make sure the board does the best job possible by pursuing inquiries and making sure that the information we receive is timely and thorough. If the board approves a motion, we need to follow through and push forward. We also need to make sure we’re seeking and listening to the advice of our counsel. The board should discuss important issues that affect students instead of simply receiving one-way communications. We don’t want to be like the Kenosha school district that ended up paying an $800K settlement.
That leads to my fourth goal, which is improving communication within the district. When parents and teachers are being informed that the board has a certain position with respect to an issue or a contract, then the statement should be something that the board has actually discussed. When something involving legal consequences occurs, we should hear about it from within and then communicate it effectively to the public. When parents have concerns about what’s going on in the schools, then we should listen with the goal of helping and not immediately question their experience or motives.
These goals should lead to the improved functioning of D64 and the ability to provide students with what they need to be successful. I care about the future of the district not only because it comprises a large portion of our property tax bills, but because it also shapes the future of our society.
If you believe in the values of humility, service, and commitment, and you prioritize family and community, then please vote for me, Carolina Y. Sales, on April 4, and ask your friends and family to do the same.
